This will eventually be the page with all sorts of
information about Double Stink Hog Farm. It will include the official
history and other information.
Double Stink Hog Farm is a family farm located on
the corner of US 460 and KY 922. This 200 acre farm owned by us,
Julius, Tom, and Howard Fister, specializes in the sale of top quality
produce at a reasonable price. You, the customers, are considered our
neighbors no matter how far you have come, and for this reason you
will always be treated with a smile and country warmth. We want you to
feel comfortable when you visit our farm!
The farm has certainly changed considerably since
the first sale of produce to the public started quite by accident over
20 years ago. We had grown a few pumpkins for our kids and had placed them
on the porch of one of our houses. Several motorists stopped to
inquire whether the pumpkins were for sale. the following year more
pumpkins were planted and then piled in the yard of one of our homes.
A crude sign was erected that simply read "Pumpkins For
Sale". Around the same time we decide to try our luck at selling
sweet corn. Some of you may well remember the early years of buying
produce out of our front yard. Often we did not have a
"salesperson" on the premises only an "honesty
box". Customers simply left their money in this box after picking
up their produce. Yeah, it sounds kind of trust-worthy, but we still
believe in people and it worked! Back then, a good day of sweet corn
sales consisted of getting rid of a bushel of corn. Well, it didn't
take long for the word to get out that some of the best sweet corn, if
not the best, in central Kentucky could be purchased on our farm and
sales began to grow rapidly. through the years we have constantly
stayed on the forefront of sweet corn development. We are always
experimenting with new varieties and try to choose those that have the
optimum balance of sweetness and corn flavor. From what people tell us
we think we are doing a pretty good job.
One thing that people always ask us is how did we
get the name of "Double Stink Hog Farm". Well, we have not
always been a produce farm. Until recently we have been a more
traditional farm dealing primarily in hogs, cattle, corn, soybeans,
and tobacco with an emphasis on hogs. At any time on the farm back in
the old days, more that 1000 pigs could be counted. Whenever possible
we tried to get our sons to clean out the hog barns before the birth
of piglets each month. Rumor has it that on one particular morning one
of the barns was being cleaned by two of our sons, Kenny and Thomas
Jr. At the lunch table, it was asked what they had been doing that
morning (this should have been obvious due to the distinct odor from
their clothing). Thomas replied, "Cleaning out one of the hog
barns, and it really stinks!" That afternoon a second hog barn
had to be cleaned . That night Thomas was asked what they had done
that afternoon. Tired of the smelly job he replied, "Cleaning out
another hog barn. This farm doesn't just stink it 'double stinks'! We
should name this farm "Double Stink Hog Farm"! The rest is
history.
Now produce sales on Double Stink Hog Farm have
grown considerable and a wide variety of items are currently
available. The sales can be divided into two separate seasons, each
which offers something unique and different for you the
customer.
Sales begin the last week of June and Runs through
mid-September. It is during this time that you can purchase our
delicious sweet corn as well as juicy vine-ripened tomatoes and home
grown green beans. Other fresh produce is available as well. Also,
during this season, you will find a wide variety of fine jams, jelly,
and honey
The second season, and perhaps our favorite, is
"Fall Harvest" that begins mid -September and runs through
Halloween. This is when we cater to kids of all ages. If you visit our
farm during the mornings and early afternoons of this season you will
probably see a large number of kids roaming the farm picking pumpkins
. When you come you are welcome to run through our pumping patch
looking for that perfect pumpkin, or you may simply select one from
our large piles outside the market. Here you will find pumpkins of all
sizes to suit your needs. We have pumpkins that are larger than 100
lbs. and others that fit in the palm of your hands. We have white
pumpkins as well as orange ones. Inside the open market you will find
cushaws, hubbard, acorn, and butternut squash. You can also purchase
large heads of broccoli and cauliflower as well as potatoes. Rows of
jams, jellies, honey, and sorghum adorn the walls of the market. In
addition you will find a large variety of decorative items such as
Indian corn, gourds, cornshocks , and straw bales to bring your own
home into the spirit of the season.
During "Fall Harvest" we also have our
"PUMPKINFEST". This festival runs every weekend from the
last weekend in September to the last weekend in October. "PUMPKINFEST" has quickly become one of the
premier festivals in Kentucky as several thousand people come to
experience "a day in the country". Bring the entire family
to pick pumpkins and feast on fresh grilled steaks and chops and then
quench your thirst with some fresh apple cider. In addition, the kids
can see animals from the farm up close. Horse drawn wagon rides that
gently plods through the fields of the farm are also available. A
large umber of craftspeople are also present to demonstrate their
unique skills. A number of antique tractors are present to help you
imagine how farming was done back in the good old days. You can also
see some of the most unique pumpkin carving in the area as a local
physician hones his skills on the pumpkins. Or if you so desire, you
can just sit at the picnic tables and simply enjoy getting out of the
city for the day. Everyone tells us that this festival is a lot of
fun, and we think you will also enjoy your visit with us.
We appreciate your continued business and look
forward to seeing you on the farm and serving you a little bit of the
country with a smile!
